Well Counselor

Resources for lifelong counselor education

Hi, I’m Dr. Olivia Bentley, PhD, LPCC-S.

I’m a licensed professional counselor, educator, mental health researcher, and puzzle enthusiast.

I’m originally from Kentucky, my pronouns are she/her, and I currently live in Nashville, TN with my cat, Bianca.

I have combined my many clinical interests, innate curiosity, and my love for teaching in creating Well Counselor. I hope this site can equip you with the tools to create the structure you need to learn and grow as counselors. All of the resources are informed by current research or my own 14+ years of experience as a licensed mental health professional.

A little bit more about my background-

I have always loved psychology- people and human behavior fascinate me- and I’ve often found myself in a ‘helper’ role, providing advice and encouragement to my friends and family over the years. This interest in psychology first led me to major in psychology as an undergrad. After some time off from the classroom, and some work experience in the restaurant industry, I found my way into a mental health counseling program, eventually receiving my Master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University and beginning work as a full-time therapist in a substance use treatment program. I loved my clients there and had the opportunity to supervise graduate students who were placed in our program as interns. It was during my time as a supervisor, that I realized that I was drawn to teaching, in addition to clinical work. I moved to DC to complete my PhD in counseling at The George Washington University. I worked in mental health research in DC for a few years before moving to Nashville, TN. I love that I can continue to learn and grow as a counselor in multiple roles: clinician, teacher, and researcher.

This site is a culmination of these roles. I’ve found there are many topics of interest to new counselors, in particular, that we never quite get around to in the classroom. I’m excited to discuss some of those here, as well as respond to new questions from all of you. Let’s stay excited about learning and growing together!

My hope is that this site is a source of information and support to new counselors and the counselor educators who teach them.

Welcome to my virtual classroom. I’m so glad you’re here.
